Senior home safety
Practical changes that make a home easier to live in
Small changes — a grab bar by the tub, brighter lighting on the stairs, a secured rug — can make daily life at home easier. DakotaBuilt walks through the home with the resident or family, lists practical improvements, and installs the non-structural ones.

A home walkthrough and practical non-structural improvements: grab bars, handrails, lighting, and removal of trip hazards.
Who it's for
Built for
- Older adults who want to stay in their homes
- Adult children helping a parent
- Landlords with older tenants
- Families preparing a home for someone's return
Problems it addresses
Hazards nobody notices anymore
Loose rugs, dim stairways and missing handrails become part of the furniture until someone trips.
Not sure where to start
Families often know something should change but not which changes are practical or what they involve.
Small jobs are hard to book
Installing two grab bars and a handrail is too small for many contractors and too much for most families.

Getting an estimate
What we'll need from you
- Home address and type (house, apartment, condo)
- Rooms or areas of concern
- Who should be present for the walkthrough
- Landlord or HOA approval, if the home is rented or in an association
- Preferred times for a visit
Safety & licensing limits
- This is a practical home walkthrough, not a medical, occupational-therapy or fall-risk assessment. For those, talk to a healthcare provider.
- We only install non-structural improvements. Ramps, stair lifts, structural, electrical and plumbing work require other qualified professionals and may require permits.
- We collect only the information needed to do the work. We don't ask for medical details.
DakotaBuilt provides general property services and documentation. We are not a licensed inspection, engineering or legal firm, we don't perform licensed trade work, and our checklists and reports record observations — they don't certify that a property meets any code or regulation.
FAQ
Senior Home Safety: common questions
Can family members arrange this for a parent?
Yes. Many requests come from adult children. We'll coordinate times with you and the resident, and walk through the list together.
Do you recommend specific medical equipment?
No. We focus on the home itself. For equipment and medical advice, a healthcare provider or occupational therapist is the right person to ask.
Is the walkthrough free?
Pricing for the walkthrough is included in the estimate you approve before anything is scheduled.
Where it's available
